Itinerary

Day 1            Saturday            July 24
Welcome to Great Falls, Montana!  Gather this evening for a welcome reception by your tour host and scholar, Clay S. Jenkinson.  After a quick orientation meeting with your Missouri River outfitter, you will depart for Ryan Dam.  Enjoy your first evening with
Clay Jenkinson as he takes you back in time, on location where Captain Meriwether Lewis found the western landscape mightier than his pen.

LODGING: La Quinta Inn Riverfront, Great Falls, Montana

Day 2            Sunday              July 25
First stop today Decision Point at the Marias river.  You can see for yourself the difficulty the captains had deciding which river was the correct river to follow.  The launch of your three day river tour begins at Coal Banks Landing.  You will have plenty of opportunities to hike through some very beautiful landscapes along the Missouri River.  Some offer petroglyphs, others teepee rings, and perhaps your tour highlight, hiking into The Eye of the Needle.  After arriving camp you have an opportunity to explore Slot Canyon  where nature carved a playground just for you out of the sandstone.  Here you can play!  Evening ends with delicious food served along the bank of the river and campfire discussions with Clay Jenkinson.                         CAMPSITEEagle Creek, Missouri River        Meals BLD

Day 3            Monday             July 26
Canoeing ten miles downstream you arrive at The Hole-in-the-Wall rock formation.  With your morning hike and lunch behind you, the next 11 miles float you past Steamboat Rock and other majestic sandstone formations.  Today Clay Jenkinson ties the connection of Prince Maximilian and his famous Swiss artist Karl Bodmer to the Lewis & Clark Trail.  While your river guides prepare you a delicious meal settle in for activities, exploring, reading, or just relaxing.  This evening learn more around the evening campfire with Clay Jenkinson.                  CAMPSITE:   Slaughter River Camp, Missouri River        Meals BLD

Day 4            Tuesday            July 27
What a great day!  After breakfast paddling 12 miles to Judith Landing you observe the river canyon changing from vertical sandstone rock to wider and deeper river bluffs.  This area is commonly referred to as "The Breaks."  Mid-afternoon welcomes you with a hot shower and a first-class hotel along the bank of the Missouri River in Ft. Benton.  The Grand Union Hotel, Montana's oldest, was built in 1882, seven years before Montana became a state.  Enjoy fine dining salon style, discussing important issues of the century before settling in for the evening.       LODGING:   Grand Union Hotel, Fort Benton, Montana         Meals BLD
