Native American West,  A New Lens - January 14-19, 2017

There will be time for you to read, write, explore, snow shoe, snow sculpt, whatever winter's whisper in the woods inspires you to do.  Several times per day group discussion gatherings will be led by Clay.  Early afternoons an organized outdoor excursion is planned, (please see below).  All activities and meetings are optional.  All meals at Lochsa Lodge are excellent!  When necessary recreational equipment is provided.  Sound Fun??  Do come!  ... and invite your friends!   We will send you your first book, and then your short list of the other great books to read, along with Clay's "Bill of Rights for Great Conversation"
.... Come join our FUN this winter in the heart of Lewis and Clark's Bitterroot Mountains!

Day 4
"Whose woods these are you think you know...  "  On the way to the lodge, you see a squirrel scamper across your snow-cut pathway and dart into an invisible tunnel crafted before.  "There is another world going on under there!"  Your morning discussions start after breakfast at 9:30 a.m. led by Clay with more group discussion gatherings designated throughout your day.  This afternoon find time to snow shoe, build a snow sculpture, or just relax by the fire.  Today's optional activity will be sipping a few new wines while watching SOMM: In the Bottle with friends, a delightful documentary film about the exasperating Sommelier Exam.  A FUN event we hope you will enjoy before diving into your hearty lodge Western dinner!

Day 5
You will start to notice "more", more than the first day you arrived.  Watch the early morning alpine glow slowly disapper, unfolding the magestic mountain behind the lodge.
The mountain peak's new fallen snow pops against the backdrop of a clear cobalt sky. Your final day's journey with Clay takes you down a path to wrap up and summarize the great texts you've read and conversations you've had. After your fireside lunch enjoy an optional hike to a nearby hot spring. There are a series of three.  Let's see if you can find the hidden one.  First you cross the Lochsa River on a USFS hand-built bridge.  You will walk a maintained, but snowy, path along this stretch of this beautiful tributary of the Lochsa River, notably named Warm Springs.  Sightings of dark tributary peak though a broken, snow-laden canvas, exposing rivulets of translucent teal, mini waterfalls.  You have arrived when you witness hot steam rising from a variety of small pools ahead, but a larger pool of steaming hot springs beckons you further above.  Deep in the forest now, your remote, whispering woods has become intoxicating.  Dress warm but layer with your swim suit underneath.  Towels will be provided.  Drink in your surroundings with pure relaxation.  A pleasure not soon forgotten.  If you go to a quiet place, this winter hike offers you your best chance to see some winter wildlife from a far.  Moose are your most prevalent, but deer, elk, bear, lynx, snow ermines, geese, swans, eagles, osprey and blue herons etc., have been spotted in this area.  Tonight our famous Farewell Dinner Party and saying goodbye to new friends.
